Can you grow cilantro in water? How to keep cilantro fresh?  In this article I am going to tell you the easiest method for growing cilantro in water that is Hydroponic cultivation. Hydroponic cultivation means growing in water. After reading this article you will come across the following points about cilantro/coriander:

1) How you can grow cilantro in water easily

Start with good quality cilantro seeds. Now crush the seeds so that it split into two halves by applying some pressure. You just need to press seeds gently with some weight, which will break cilantro seeds into two halves.

You have to be careful while crushing seeds, you just have to split seeds into two halves otherwise it will make cilantro powder. After crushing, split Seeds are ready. Now you can take a container that must not be transparent. Fill it with water. Now above water filled container, keep a net basket .Now on this net basket, sprinkle split seeds.Add little more water in the container, so that seeds can come in contact with water. Do not let the seeds dry. If you are unable to keep seeds moist by refilling the water, then cover the seeds with wet tissue paper or cotton cloth. Now keep this setup at bright location.

Tips & Tricks:

(a) For better germination, purchase agricultural grade seeds from agriculture store or you can purchase normal cilantro seeds from general store.

(b) In case you are growing cilantro in soil, then also you must consider breaking seeds in two halves. This treatment is used to improve germination rate.

(c) Do not sprinkle all cilantro seeds at one time, instead Sprinkle them in 3 batches at an interval of 5-6 days. This will help you in harvesting fresh cilantro later. For instance, I have saved some seeds for next two times.

(d) There is a trick in harvesting, just cut mature leaves leaving smaller leaves to grow for further harvesting.

This was complete procedure of growing cilantro in water.

Weather Requirements

In winter, Direct sun light is okay. But in summer you have to protect hydroponically grown cilantro setup from direct sun. In 7-10 days seeds will start germinating. I have kept tissue paper wet over the seeds, to keep it moist for longer. When seeds starts germinating, either remove the tissue paper, or just let it be there but tear and remove with hands, so that roots can go into water.  Cilantro plant starts giving very good harvest from 40 days onward. You can see the result after 45 days of planting. You can see plant is growing very well ; roots are also growing very nicely. At this point you might have a query in your head.

Whether hydroponically grown cilantro does not need any fertilizer for growth?

Guys, let me tell you, Fertilizer is required. For this, you need any liquid fertilizer or water soluble solid fertilizer. Lots of hydroponic fertilizer option are there in the market .Here I am using, solid water soluble fertilizer with 30:10:10 NPK ratio. This fertilizer is having added micro-nutrients, so I need not to mix anything else. Do change water at every 15 days interval and add 1/4th teaspoon of this fertilizer. And do not keep this fertilizer in organic or inorganic category. As these are mineral based fertilizer, it will release only those nutrients which plant use to absorb for growth. Isn’t it really easy, growing cilantro in water. Now let me take my first mega harvest. And after this I will keep on getting mega harvest an interval of every 6-7 days.

2)Hydroponically grown cilantro water requirements

At this point let me tell you, in what condition, cilantro would not be able to grow in water.

Firstly, in case water is having TDS more than 400 that hinders cilantro seed germination & plant growth. Secondly, if your water is having high salt concentration , comes under hard water category. Then also cilantro would not able to grow in water.

The best alternative is to use RO water.
